Lesotho Law Society’s 2024 Annual General Meeting Sets New Benchmark with Leribe Edition at Mahlakapese Lodge

The 2024 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Lesotho Law Society, held on 25 July 2025, will be remembered as a landmark event, not only for its impressive turnout but also for the elegance, depth, and regional collaboration it inspired. Hosted outside the capital city of Maseru, for the first time in recent memory, the AGM took place at the magnificent Mahlakapese Lodge in Leribe. The venue delivered not just functionality but flair, providing a dignified setting that rivalled even our best-attended meetings in Maseru.

A Record-Breaking Turnout

The legal fraternity showed up in unprecedented numbers, surpassing all prior attendance figures. From young practitioners to seasoned attorneys, the gathering reflected a renewed sense of unity and commitment to professional development. The AGM’s location in Leribe proved no barrier, in fact, it sparked enthusiasm and broader participation, highlighting the importance of decentralising key events for inclusivity and accessibility.

A Showcase of Regional Collaboration

This year’s AGM also served as a vital platform for regional legal engagement. We were honoured to host esteemed delegations and representatives from across Southern Africa, underscoring the importance of cross-border collaboration in strengthening the legal profession. Our distinguished guests included:

  • The Chairperson of Advocates for Transformation (AFT) and his delegation;
  • The National Secretary General and Gauteng Deputy Chairperson of the Black Lawyers Association (BLA);
  • A representative of De Rebus;
  • The Executive Director of the Legal Practice Council of South Africa;
  • The Secretary General of the Law Society of Eswatini and his delegation.

Their presence fostered valuable dialogue on shared challenges, legal reform, and the evolving role of law societies in upholding professional ethics and public accountability.

Panel Discussion on Legal Ethics: Elevating the Conversation

A highlight of the weekend was the thought-provoking panel on Legal Ethics, facilitated by Dr. Letzadzo Isaac Kometsi, a renowned academic with expertise spanning Commercial Arbitration, Export Trade Law, and Legal Methods from the National University of Lesotho.

The panel featured:

  • Ms. Zurayda Mayet (Mayet & Associates);
  • Ms. Maleetoane Moerane (Webber Newdigate Attorneys);
  • Advocate Molapo (LD Molapo Legal Consultants and Chambers)

Together, they unpacked key ethical challenges facing the legal profession in Lesotho, including the balance between client advocacy and candour, professional integrity in commercial practice, and the societal expectations of lawyers in public discourse. Ms. Mayet’s contribution added a practical and values-driven lens to the discussion, reinforcing the profession’s shared duty to uphold justice both inside and outside the courtroom.

Looking Forward: A Profession United in Purpose

We extend sincere gratitude to the Law Society of Lesotho, all invited stakeholders, and our fellow practitioners who made this AGM an outstanding success. It is clear from the turnout and calibre of discussion that the legal profession in Lesotho is evolving, towards greater cohesion, regional engagement, and a steadfast commitment to excellence.

The Leribe AGM was more than a meeting, it was a moment of renewal. We look forward to continued collaboration, deeper education, and a legal community that is both grounded and forward-looking.
